(Nov. 30, 2017)  Getting dressed up to attend another rubber-chicken dinner – even for a good cause – can be a hassle.  So, the Miramar National Cemetery Support Foundation has found a better way to raise money: A “Virtual Gala” that allows donors to make contributions on-line.  No evening gown or black tie required.

Closes Veterans’ Day Tribute

(Nov. 11, 2017)  At the close of Veterans’ Day 2017, the stirring notes of “Taps” sounded across the manicured lawns of Miramar National Cemetery.  The setting sun glinted off white marble headstones that mark the graves of thousands of veterans of America’s wars.

 

The bugle call rang out from the Veterans’ Tribute Tower & Carillon where some 100 San Diego veterans and their family members gathered for a brief ceremony that ended a busy day of area tributes to those who served their country in war and peace.

Veterans, Active Duty Members, Public Invited to Veterans’ Day Service at Miramar National Cemetery

Veterans, active duty service members, and members of the public are invited to attend a late afternoon commemorative service on Veterans’ Day, Saturday, Nov. 11, at Miramar National Cemetery.

Congressman Scott Peters (D-52) of San Diego will be the guest speaker.  The service will begin at 4:15 p.m. on the lawn at the foot of the Veterans Tribute Tower & Carillon on the north side of the cemetery.

The service will feature patriotic music played by the Carillon, and will conclude at about 5 p.m. with a rendition of “Taps”.  The Carillon plays the traditional bugle call at the close …

Support Foundation Seeks $25,000 Grant from County of San Diego

(June 12, 2017) The Miramar National Cemetery Support Foundation is seeking a grant of $25,000 from the County of San Diego. The funds would be used for maintenance of the Avenue of Flags, and for continuation of memorial services and events for veterans at Miramar National Cemetery.

Foundation Chief Financial Officer Richard Sells made the request at a County Board of Supervisors meeting, June 12. His was one of a number of presentations made by various groups seeking funding from the Supervisors.

Memorial Day “is the day set aside to honor the valor of our service members who gave all,” Air Force Brig. Gen. Russell A. Muncy stressed during the Veterans Memorial Service, May 28, at Miramar National Cemetery.  It’s the day to remember “those men and women who demonstrated the courage of soul necessary to defend our nation.”

March Air Reserve Base Commander to Speak at Veterans Memorial Service May 28

FREE EVENT IS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

Brig. Gen. Russell A. Muncy, Commander, March Air Reserve Base and the 452nd Air Mobility Wing, will be the featured speaker at the sixth annual Veterans Memorial Service at Miramar National Cemetery at 1 p.m., Sunday, May 28.  The Miramar National Cemetery Support Foundation sponsors the service.

As commander of the Air Force Reserve’s largest wing, with more than 4,000 personnel, nine C-17A transport aircraft, and 14 KC-135R tankers, he directs the support of worldwide airlift and air refueling operations.

Vietnam Veterans to Receive Commemorative Pins

Fort Rosecrans and Miramar National Cemeteries will conduct ceremonies March 29 and April 6 marking the anniversaries of two major conflicts and honoring the sacrifices of the Americans who fought in them.

The two Veterans Administration cemeteries will host concurrent ceremonies at 11 a.m., Wednesday, 29 March, to mark the Anniversary of the Vietnam War, and to honor and express appreciation to veterans of that war.

Granite Benches Installed at Cemetery’s Veterans Tribute Tower & Carillon Site

Benches Memorialize Military’s Commitment to Duty, Honor, Country

Three granite benches engraved with the U.S. Armed Forces’ commitment to Duty, Honor, Country have been installed at the foot of the Veterans Tribute Tower & Carillon at Miramar National Cemetery.

“The benches provide an opportunity for those visiting the cemetery to pause in comfort while they reflect on the sacrifices of those who served our country,” said Cathy Fiorelli, Foundation President and CEO.  “We want to thank those individuals, charitable organizations, and corporations who have contributed to the important work of the Foundation in providing these enhancements to the cemetery.”

New Floral Removal Schedule Starts March 15, 2017 at Miramar National Cemetery

In advance of the spring mowing season, Miramar National Cemetery will begin removing floral arrangements and other decorations left at gravesites on the first and third Wednesdays each month, starting March 15, 2017.

The new schedule assists staff with its springtime lawn care maintenance. “With the significant amount of rain this past winter and warmer weather on the horizon, we are expecting a much more robust mowing and trimming schedule this spring,” said Rex Kern, Miramar National Cemetery director.

Catherine Fiorelli Elected Foundation President & CEO; Dennis Schoville Elected Chairman of the Board

Catherine Fiorelli has been elected to serve as President and CEO of the Miramar National Cemetery Support Foundation – only the third person to hold that title, and the first woman. She succeeds immediate past President and CEO Dennis A. Schoville, who was elected to fill the vacant position of Chairman of the Board.

Fiorelli, who has participated in Foundation activities almost since its inception in 2006, previously served as Secretary of the Board. She is general manager of Greenwood Memorial Park & Mortuary in San Diego.
