Since the American Revolution, women have borne the hardships of war and frequently have made the ultimate sacrifice of their lives, Navy Capt. Laura M. Scotty told an audience of some 500 during the fourth annual Veterans Memorial Service, May 24, at Miramar National Cemetery.

Vietnamese Americans Commemorate 1975 Fall of Saigon; Foundation President Dennis Schoville is Guest Speaker

More than 100 attended the 40th Anniversary commemoration ceremony of the fall of Saigon, April 26, hosted by the local Vietnamese American community.

Held at the Flying Leatherneck Museum, the event included remarks by community leader Nguyen Giao, selections by a choral group, soloists, and a moment of silence to remember those who gave their lives defending their homeland during the Vietnam War.

Brig. Gen. Robert Cardenas, Foundation Chairman Emeritus, Elected to National Aviation Hall of Fame

(Dec. 16, 2014, Dayton, Ohio) Brig. Gen. Robert L. Cardenas, USAF (Ret.), Chairman Emeritus of the Miramar National Cemetery Support Foundation, has been elected to the National Aviation Hall of Fame. He will be inducted Oct. 15, along with three other nominees in the Class of 2015.

Cardenas will join a roster of 225 men and women air, and space pioneers who have been inducted by the NAHF since its founding in 1962. Other aviation luminaries enshrined in the Hall of Fame include the Wright Brothers, Charles Lindbergh, Amelia Earhart, John Glenn and Neil Armstrong.

Air Force Veteran, Entrepreneur Victoria A. Nenner Joins Miramar National Cemetery Support Foundation Board

Dec. 3, 2014 – Victoria A. Nenner, a U.S. Air Force veteran and owner of Nenner Enterprises, a firm that provides continuing education to nurses and other medical staff, has joined the Board of Directors of the Miramar National Cemetery Support Foundation.

During the Vietnam War, Nenner served four years as a staff and charge nurse in an Air Force hospital at Tachikawa AFB, Japan, where she treated soldiers wounded in battle. She met her late husband, Paul, while serving in Japan. She left active duty as a captain, and continued in the reserves until 1977.

Armed Forces YMCA Volunteers Update the Avenue of Flags

May 6, 2014 — On a blustery day that had flags whipping around their poles, four teams of Navy volunteers, organized by the Armed Forces YMCA of San Diego, hoisted new flags into place on the Miramar National Cemetery Avenue of Flags.

The Miramar National Cemetery Support Foundation, which sponsors the unique 50-flag display, provides new flags every six months. Used flags are presented to veterans’ groups, patriotic, and civic organizations. Individuals who donate $200 to the Foundation also receive a flag in a wooden presentation case.

Robert J. “Bob” Gilliland
