This year, we are focused on raising $15,000 to support the annual cost of maintaining the Avenue of Flags that lines the main throughfare of the Miramar National Cemetery. These funds will not only assist us in changing out the flags a minimum of twice a year, but also aid in the extensive maintenance on the flagpoles that are now over a decade old requiring additional attention for proper function. In 2023, due to Southern California storms and high winds, we changed the flags three times. The flags fly 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year over our nation’s heroes and their families. When they are weathered and tattered, we change them out to ensure we properly honor our veterans who lay at rest.

The Support Foundation’s mission is to support the activities of the Miramar National Cemetery by advising on specific memorial projects, raising funds to construct those projects, administering memorial trust funds, and sponsoring commemorative ceremonies to mark significant patriotic events throughout the year, including Memorial Day and Veterans Day. In previous years, the Miramar National Cemetery Support Foundation was honored to work with the Veterans Administration to provide the Avenue of Flags, Veterans Tribute Tower and Carillon, and to coordinate the placement of other veterans’ monuments in the cemetery. The distinctive memorials currently at Miramar National Cemetery help create a beautiful and peaceful environment for families who come to visit their loved ones – our nation’s heroes – in their final resting place.

Later this year, and in large part of our donors, we will begin the work on the largest project the Support Foundation has undertaken to date. The project will enhance the cemetery’s Flag Assembly Area as a venue for veterans’ programs and ceremonies providing permanent guest seating and other upgrades.
