May 6, 2014 — On a blustery day that had flags whipping around their poles, four teams of Navy volunteers, organized by the Armed Forces YMCA of San Diego, hoisted new flags into place on the Miramar National Cemetery Avenue of Flags.

The Miramar National Cemetery Support Foundation, which sponsors the unique 50-flag display, provides new flags every six months. Used flags are presented to veterans’ groups, patriotic, and civic organizations. Individuals who donate $200 to the Foundation also receive a flag in a wooden presentation case.

March 8, 2014 –Dennis A. Schoville, a San Diego attorney and highly decorated Army helicopter flight section commander during Vietnam, has been named President and CEO of the Miramar National Cemetery Support Foundation.  He joined the Board in November 2012.

Schoville succeeds Dr. Gary Parks, who died Feb. 4, 2014, after a short illness.  He was 70.  Dr. Parks had led the Foundation since 2008.

Nov. 14, 2013 – The old man wearing a bright white shirt and veterans’ cap stood stiffly at attention, saluting as four soldiers in dress uniforms briskly hoisted colors into the blue sky above Miramar National Cemetery.

Nov. 1, 2013 – In a colorful Friday afternoon event, some 20 Navy active duty sailors and members of Veterans 360 replaced all 50 of the worn Stars ‘n Stripes on Miramar National Cemetery’s Avenue of Flags.

Working in teams of two, they lowered the collection of National Ensigns that had flown over the cemetery for the past six months, and hoisted the new flags into place atop poles lining the cemetery’s main thoroughfare.
