Veterans Group Hoists 50 Fresh Star Spangled Banners on Miramar National Cemetery’s Avenue of Flags

Nov. 1, 2013 – In a colorful Friday afternoon event, some 20 Navy active duty sailors and members of Veterans 360 replaced all 50 of the worn Stars ‘n Stripes on Miramar National Cemetery’s Avenue of Flags.

Working in teams of two, they lowered the collection of National Ensigns that had flown over the cemetery for the past six months, and hoisted the new flags into place atop poles lining the cemetery’s main thoroughfare.

Coordinating the evolution was Wayne Louth of World Memorial, an organization founded to preserve the memory of those who died on 9/11. Veterans 360 is a transition program that helps young combat veterans who are unemployed, homeless, or need support services, such as education, health and wellness.

Sponsored by the Miramar National Cemetery Support Foundation, the Avenue of Flags was dedicated Jan. 28, 2012. The Foundation also provides the new flags, which are changed every May 1 and November 1.
